f Asia Minor and Persia, and has been forcenturies before its introduction into Europe (1258 A.D.) a domestic fish, occupyingsomewhat the position that the pig does among mammals, at least in regaid to itscapacity for absorbing scraps. Like all animals in a state of domestication it is extremely variable, andthree well-marked races occur :—the full-scaled Carp, the Mirror Carp with scat-tered scales of large size, and the Leather Carp destitute of scales. The first men-tioned may be regarded as approaching most nearly the original stock and are themost prolific; the last are the furthest removed from the original as to their coat,they are le.ist prolific, but attain the largest size and fatten most rapidly. TheMirror Carp occupy an intermediate position in both respects. They are veiy prolific, the females of the third and fourth year depositingfrom one to five hundred thousand eggs, when the water of the pond in whichthey have hibernated reaches a temperature of 63*^ F. 471 While specially adapted for warm climates (they do not o;row in weightmaterially in water of less than 48^* F.) on account of their ability to standwarmer water than most fish, their culture is nevertheless prosecuted successfullyin climates (Sweden for example) not very different from our own. Special shallow ponds are arranoed for the fry in which vegetable food issupplied for them by previously sowing clover; the larger fish, however, are fedon mixed animal and vegetable food, for example, chopped straw mixed with driedblood, etc. The winter pond is made seven feet deep, and in this no food requires tobe provided as the fish neither feed nor grow there. They are in season fromOctober till May, and they are always placed for a week before sale in a pondtraversed by a current of running water to remove the muddy taste which allsuch bottom-feeding fish have when taken from the water. As they bring highprices in Europe, 16 to 20 cents a lb., their culture is attended with consider-
