[edit]DescriptionCommemorative Plaque, Notte Street - Plymouth - geograph.org.uk - 1598143.jpg |
English: Commemorative Plaque, Notte Street - Plymouth The plaque carries the inscription:
JAMES COOK DISCOVERER AND NAVIGATOR 1728 - 1779 Captain Royal Navy and leader of three great voyages of discovery which charted unknown land in the South Seas and Pacific Ocean. On each voyage he set out from Plymouth. He dined in a house on this site with Cookworthy before embarking on his first voyage in 1768. 'Cookworthy' was the renowned potter and manufacturer of porcelain, William Cookworthy (1705-1785) whose home was once on this site. In the 1880s Notte Street underwent a re-development to rid the area of its artisans dwellings and as part of that programme, Cookworthys large house was rebuilt as a Mission Hall with the business that he had founded on the ground floor. This plaque us mounted beneath the sill of that building. Re-developers were knocking the town about long before the Germans and today's profiteers did! |
