mples in such shades are furnished in Nos. 1, 2,and 3, Plate VI. In the first, black is the preponderatingelement, but in the third green is the prevailing hue. Withthe red browns given in ISTos. 1, 2, and 3 on Plate III., theyform perfect contrasts. The most pleasing combinationsare those in which the greenish derivatives are blended inequal quantities with the reddish browns as follows : darkgreen (No. 1, Plate VI.) with dark brown (No. 1, PlateIII.) ; mid green (No. 2, Plate VI.) with mid brown (No.2, Plate III.) ; and shaded green (No. 3, Plate VI.) withlight brown (No. 3, Plate III.). An endless variety ofstriped and checked patterns in wool, worsted, and cottonmaterials is got by combining these shades on the lines justindicated. Some excellent ground twists result from com-bining dark brown (No. 1, Plate III.) and shaded green(No. 3, Plate VI.) ; dark green (No. 1, Plate VI.) and lightbrown (No. 3, Plate III.) ; and mid green (No. 2, PlateVI.) and mid brown (No. 2, Plate III.).

These blend harmoniouslywith the tinted reds given on Plate III. For example, thepea-green of No. 4, Plate VI. when blended with the whitishpink of No. 4 of Plate III., the pale green of No. 5, PlateVI. with the rose colour of No. 5, Plate III., and the tintedgreen of No. 6, Plate VI. with the tinted red of No. 6,Plate III., all form beautiful and lustrous contrasts. Tintamalgamations of this class are popular in silk textures, inwhich articles they give exquisite coloured effects. As thetints of the respective couplets perfectly balance, being ofthe exact depth of hue, they invariably constitute mellowand choice combinations. Though these brilliant tints arenot extensively employed in fancy woollen and worstedfabrics, still there are some classes of these textures inwhich they are used for ground purposes. One illustr
