Nederlands: Ketting (onderdeel). Vermoedelijk een slavenketen van Haiti.
Indien een slavenketen, moet deze voor 1804 in gebruik zijn geweest, want vanaf die datum riep Jean-jacques Dessalines, opvolger van rebellenleider Toussaint Louverture, Haïti uit tot onafhankelijke republiek. Het was na de VS het eerste onafhankelijk land op het westelijk halfrond en de eerste en voorlopig laatste zwarte republiek in de wereld. Vanaf de tweede helft van de 17e eeuw werd Haïti herbevolkt - de inheemse bevolking was grotendeels gestorven aan nieuwe Europese ziekten - met honderdduizenden slaven die uit Afrika werden gehaald voor de suiker- en koffieplantages. In 1697 gaf Spanje het bevel over het westelijke deel van Hispaniola over aan Frankrijk, dat het gebied Saint-Domingue noemde. Het werd een van Frankrijks rijkste koloniën. Saint-Domingue produceerde rond 1780 ongeveer 40 procent van alle suiker en 60 procent van alle koffie die in Europa werd gebruikt. Deze ene kolonie (van ongeveer de grootte van België) produceerde meer suiker en koffie dan alle Britse West-Indische koloniën samen. Helaas moeten ook nu nog veel mensen, vooral kinderen, op Haïti in erbarmelijke omstandigheden leven en werken. Een restavek (ook: restavec, vanuit het Frans: reste avec="verblijft bij") is een persoon van het platteland van Haïti die als hulp in de huishouding werkt bij een gezin in de stad. Velen van hen zijn minderjarig, al vanaf vier of vijf jaar oud. Vaak leven ze in omstandigheden die overeenkomen met slavernij. Ze worden dan ook wel aangeduid als kindslaven. Hoe het Cohan (Comité de Cooperation Haitiano Neerlandaise) aan de keten kwam, is vooralsnog niet bekend. |
