Summary[edit]

Description
English: Meloe autumnalis. In Meloe autumnalis the shape of the prothorax is characteristic and distinctive: compared to the proscarabaeus and violaceus species, it is flatter dorsally and shiny, it has a longitudinal groove, at least in the posterior half. Insects of the Meloe genus are beetles, the adults are phytophagous and the larvae are parasites of Hymenoptera and Orthoptera. The eggs, laid on the blades of grass, give rise to larvae that climb onto the flowers and attach themselves to the bees who involuntarily carry them into the nest. Here they eat bee eggs, pollen and nectar, undergoing various transformations before becoming adults. They produce cantharidin which is toxic in large doses.
