| Description |
California, southern Mono County, Coldwater Canyon fan in superbloom, White Mountains, Chalfant Valley - Owens Valley drainage, elevation 1405 m (4610 ft). A sample of the 2017 superbloom along the west slope of the White Mountains. I hadn't seen the area looking this good since 1986! Posted with a 1989 view from the same area showing what this slope looks like most of the time, for contrast. Some of the species visible here include yellowthroats (Phacelia fremontii), shining stickleaf (Mentzelia nitens), whitestem stickleaf (Mentzelia albicaulis), shadscale (Atriplex confertifolia), indigobush (Psorothamnus arborescens minutifolius), yellow peppercress (Lepidium flavum), purple mat (Nama demissa demissa), rose four o'clock (Mirabilis alipes), and barbwire Russian thistle (Salsola paulsenii). |
