Nicolas Louis de Lacaille realizó observaciones entre el 06.08.1751 y el 18.07.1752 para crear más tarde las 14 nuevas constelacionesː Antlia, Circinus, Caelum, Fornax, Horologium, Mensa, Microscopium, Norma, Octans, Pictor, Reticulum, Sculptor, Telescopium y Pyxis.

También catalogó 10.035 estrellasː 8 de 1° magnitud, 15 de 2° magnitud, 54 de 3° magnitud, 86 de 4° magnitud, 203 de 5° magnitud, 1536 de 6° magnitud, 8093 de 7° magnitud y 40 nebulosas.

Para ello, y en ese período de tiempo, creó 25 zonas o bandas de observación en declinación, con un ancho de 2° 42' o 2° 43' cada una (poco más del romboide del campo visual del retículo de su telescopio) y desde los 90° (Polo Sur) hasta los -23° 27' (Eclíptica 21/12), dividiendo, la diferencia de 66° 33' entre esos dos puntos, nuevamente, en 25 zonas.

Su telescopio tenía 71,06 cms. de distancia focal, 1,35 cms. de apertura y 8 aumentos, y estaba fijado paralelamente a un cuadrante mural ubicado sobre la línea meridiana del lugar (Monte de la Mesa, cerca de la ciudad del Cabo de la Buena Esperanza, Sudáfrica).
