Der Schild vereint in der Sprache der Heraldik das Wappen des Berliner Erzbistums mit dem persönlichen Wappen des Erzbischofs. Die Felder 1, 2, 3 und 4 zeigen die Wappen der vorreformatorischen Vorgängerdiözesen Brandenburg, Havelberg, Cammin und Lebus. Im Herzschild ist der Stern das Symbol für die Gottesmutter Maria, die auf dem Meer des Lebens als „Meeresstern“ (Stella maris) die Richtung weist. Der Stern erinnert zudem an den Stern von Bethlehem, der die Weisen zur Krippe führte (Mt 2,2). Das fließende Wasser verweist auf Christus als Quelle des ewigen Lebens (Joh 4,14); zugleich zeigt der Fluss die enge Verbindung des Erzbischofs mit seiner rheinische Heimat im Erzbistum Köln, an die Elbe, die durch sein bisheriges Bistum Dresden-Meißen fließt, sowie an Spree und Havel, die Flüsse seiner jetzigen Heimat, dem Erzbistum Berlin.
