Der Wappenschild zeigt rechts auf blauem Grund einen Stern. Er ist das Symbol der Gottesmutter Maria („Stella Maris - Meerstern") und eine Erinnerung an den Stern von Betlehem, der die Weisen zur Krippe führte (Mt 2,2). Das fließende Wasser verweist auf Christus, die Quelle des Lebens, der den Menschen lebendiges Wasser schenkt (Joh 4,11). Zugleich hebt der stilisierte Fluss die enge Verbindung des Bischofs mit seiner alten und neuen Heimat an Rhein und Elbe hervor.

Auf der linken Seite sind die Symbole des heiligen Bischofs Benno (1066-1106) zu sehen, Fisch und Schlüssel. Benno ist der Patron des Bistums Dresden-Meißen. Der Legende nach warf er, als er in die Verbannung gehen musste, den Meißner Domschlüssel in die Elbe und fand diesen bei seiner Heimkehr im Bauch eines Fisches wieder. Der Fisch ist das uralte Symbol für Christus und der Schlüssel Zeichen der Verwaltung der von Gott anvertrauten Kirche.

Im unteren Teil des Wappenschildes ist das Christuslamm mit der Siegesfahne (Apk 5,12) abgebildet. Dies ist auch Teil des Bistumswappens. Es weist auf Christus hin, der siegreich von den Toten auferstanden ist.

Der Wappenspruch lautet übersetzt: „Freut euch allezeit, der Herr ist nahe" (Phil 4,4).
