Герб Арзамаса утвержден 16 августа 1781 года, когда он был уездным городом Нижегородского наместничества.

На сайте http://WWW.OKLANDIA.MUROM.RU/OKLANDIA/ приведена статья С.П.Никонова, где автор объясняет символику герба следующим образом: красное стропило символизирует русские войска, зеленое стропило - войска ордынцев, направленность стропил в одну точку - битву между русскими и ордынцами во время Казанского похода Ивана IV в 1552 году. [1]
