Summary[edit]
The grey obelisk on the right of this picture is Coal Tax "post" Nail No. 3 Archived 2012-12-24 at Archive.today. It is at grid reference TQ 4897 8783 on the north side of the Great Eastern Main Line between Chadwell Heath and Romford stations. It is about 280 metres east of Whalebone Lane South, immediately south of the West Ham United F.C. training ground and opposite the back gardens of Crow Lane. This view is looking west; the cars on the left are in Crow Lane, waiting to come out on to Whalebone Lane South.
It is listed on Images of England at Ioe No. 198260 (Barking and Dagenham - the date should be 1851) and Ioe No. 201600 (Havering - inaccurate description and incorrect image as at 2007 July 25). Google aerial photo.
Originally the boundary ran right through the obelisk but there has been some re-allignment in this area and the obelisk now lies entirely within Barking and Dagenham. (Election maps shows this best but it is difficult to create a link to it.)
