Example of a type 4 tax post, Rye Brook, Ashtead Common

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Since 1605, the Corporation of the City of London raised funds by weighing/measuring the amount of coal brought into the Port of London. The point at which tax became payable were marked by a series of posts. There were five different types, the most common being " type 2" by the sides of roads. "Type 4" posts were stone or cast iron obelisks just under 15 feet tall positioned by railways opened before 1866
