Summary[edit]

Description
English: Coal Post, Wormley Wood. This coal post is one of 250 which encircled London after the Great Fire in 1666. Taxes on coal and wine were collected at the post to help pay for the rebuilding of London. The post stands in a secluded corner of Wormley Wood, part of 360 acres of woodland purchased from the Gascoyne Cecil Estate. It had been in that family since queen Elizabeth I's minister Sir William Cecil bought it 300 years ago. This is in the Wormley-Hoddesdon Park Wood South Site of Special Scientific Interest.
