A család a szatmár-vármegyei Bere községtől nyerte nevét. Bere község 1325-ben a Berey nemzetségé volt, melytől 1412-ben Bélteki Drágfi Sándor, Drágh vajdának fia erőszakosan elfoglalta, de 1416-ban Berey Jánost és Óváry Jánost törvényesen visszahelyezték birtokukba. A család egy része Szabolcs és Szilágy vármegyékbe szakadt. Első ismert őse János, 1416-ban, Ferencz deák szatmári szolgabíró 1560-ban. A család nemességét II. Rudolf király újította meg 1580 márczius 8-án Berey Miklós és neje Anna, valamint testvérei János és András részére. Nemesi bizonyítványt nyert Középszolnok vármegyében 1771 deczember 13-án. A család jelenleg élő tagjai: Berey József, ref. lelkész, esperes, vm. bizottsági tag és író Nagyecseden, Berey Imre és Berey Károly. Czímer: kékben baloldalon kinyúló vörösmezű könyöklő kar, görbe kardot és hajánál fogva török főt tart. Kísérők: hat-ágú aranycsillag és ezüst félhold. Sisakdísz: könyöklő vörösmezü kar, görbe kardot tart. Takarók: kékarany, vörösezüst.English: The coat of arms of the Apponyi family |
