Summary[edit]

Description
English: Indonesia is the world’s leading producer of palm oil, supplying approximately half of this commodity globally. While palm oil is a high yield crop, the rapid expansion of the industry has severe environmental and social consequences. According to a new study, more than 80 per cent of the Indonesian rainforest, mangroves and peatlands are potentially at risk of disappearing due to their proximity to palm oil plantations. This cloud-free mosaic of Kalimantan, Indonesia, obtained from Copernicus Sentinel-2 images acquired between January and August 2020, shows the area most susceptible to further oil palm field expansion. The high revisit frequency of Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites offers innovative opportunities to acquire cloudless optical data and to obtain high-definition time series that allow to study the evolution of natural and human-caused phenomena.
