Cloth seal |

Description |
English: A square lead item, probably a cloth seal. It is 20mm square and 2mm thick with some slight variation from distortion. One side is decorated with a figurative design - possibly a right facing head, breast and wings of an eagle or other bird. Details are obscured by wear and lines possibly the result of a past bend. The other side is inscribed 'dot OATE/DABI/TYR' the style of the letters is unusual - possibly indicating an early medieval or continental origin. The item may have been cut down as the edges of some of the letters have been lost, this may have removed any loops. The edges are also rough in places so a loop could have been removed. The edges are beveled away from the pictorial side. The item is unusally in being decorated on both sides, for this reason it is though not to be a Pilgrim Badge. Spencer suggests "As a rule pilgrim badges are decorated on one side only" (1998:4). Cloth seals are also normally only stamped on one side but Egan (1994:197) includes several continental seals for wire or thread that are stamped on both sides and suspended from a loop. |
