Title
Cloth seal
Description
English: A lead cloth seal with only disc one surviving, circular in shape measuring c23mm in diameter. This cloth seal is very similar to an example from London (see Egan 1995, p40-41 and p170, fig 19, no 61).

On the back face of the surviving disc the rivet has a ridged cross and sword in the first quarter (arms of London) in ornate shield, the rest of which is missing with disc two.

The front face of disc one has a crown over the shield with the arms of England, E R to the sides. The border legend on this face reads [S'VLII'PA] O' VIALLE'LON, from parallels it is likely that the border legend of the missing disc two would have read LONDINI PRO PANNIS LANICIS.

Egan (1995, 40-41) explains that these legends are contracted and the legend had the meaning 'seal of alnage of salable cloths of London // for woollen cloths at London.' The contracted form of the legend as seen on this example appear on seals of this series dated 1564-1573. These seem to be the only English seals of any date to specify woollen cloths. They have been found widely in England as well as in London.
