Cleansing the Augean stable. |

Description |
English: A rushing torrent or waterfall, inscribed 'Public Determination', sweeps as from a broken dam through a building and pours through a huge gap in a wall into the Thames (right). It overturns the throne, whose tilting canopy projects from the summit of the cascade, and sweeps away opponents of Reform, among whom are six bishops. Wellington flees before the advancing water with greater agility than the others, trampling on a prostrate bishop; he says: 'Did not believe in such a torrent'. Cumberland lies on his back under a cascade, saying, 'We shall meet with watery Greraves' [e crossed out] [alluding to Lord Graves, see BM Satires No. 16011, &c.]. Behind Wellington is Lyndhurst, clutching the gown of the fleeing Archbishop of Canterbury; he says 'I wish I had never put B before A, it has turned Alpha into Omega'. Londonderry clings to the canopy of the throne, saying, 'Why we never dream't of this'. Eldon crouches on the back of a struggling bishop who is spouting water. Arms and legs project from the flood on which a bishop's wig is floating. A man in back view clutches the crumbling wall. The Thames (right) is covered with boats whose occupants applaud the catastrophe, as do tiny figures on the riverside. c. May 1832

Notes |
(Description and comment from M. Dorothy George, 'Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires in the British Museum', XI, 1954) See No. 17032, &c. Lyndhurst's fatal motion, see No. 17030, was to take the enfranchisement clauses before the disfranchisement (Schedule A) clauses. |

Licensing[edit]
This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
