Title
Clay tobacco pipe c1680-1720 drawing by David Higgins
Description
English: Fragment of a clay tobacco pipe bowl dating c1680-1720, with a round The bowl is badly chipped and abraded from having been in the plough soil but shows traces of having been burnished originally. It is made of a coarse fabric with gritty inclusions, which is typical of white firing clay found in Coal Measures deposits. The bowl has a stem bore of 7/64" and the heel has been stamped with a circular maker's mark, which was poorly impressed at an odd angle and is now very abraded, making it hard to read. The surname initial appears to be a 'B' or 'R' but the Christian initial is unclear. There is no border around the initials, nor does there appear to be anything between them. This mark cannot presently be paralleled in north Wales but should be recognisable when a better example turns up. Although unidentified at present, this example adds to a growing number of different seventeenth century marks recorded from north Wales and provides a useful addition to the distribution map.

Height: 28.2mm; width: 17.4mm; length: 48.0mm; weight: 7.60g
