e got to pretend hes here or else ourjob would be gone. The whole garden wouldcollapse if people knew he was out of it. And then strange to say it did collapse. Well, not exactly collapse, explained Clara,to Geraldine, when she was telling her of thesewonderful adventures. On the edge of the wood Clara suddenlycame across a most curious figure riding to-wards her on something that looked partly likea horse, but more like an obstinate old Bull. The rider was dressed in white armour ofvery old pattern, and she wondered whether hereally went into battle in such antiquatedharness, and could not help thinking that it wasapwonder that he came out alive, if he did. His horse was hung around with strangeweapons—a broken wooden sword which didnot look as if it could ever have done muchdamage even when new, and a heavy spikedclub with which he belaboured his old horse,whose hide, however, was fortunately verythick. Just as Clara was about to run away andhide herself from this terrifying creature, sheheard a voice in the distance, shouting, Ulti-ulti-ulti-matum ! and a Knight in red armourdashed out of the wood on the other side. Coming up to the other, he saluted gravely,and said, We will have a Peace Conference,and then a fight. The White Knight, after thinking for sometime, remarked, You will, I presume, observethe Rules of Battle. Certainly, replied the other, you willobserve your rules, and Ill observe miner That is fair, said the White Knight, Iwill now read you my rules so that there shallbe no mistake.
