close to 330 feet.The uplands extend Ijack indefinitely to the east and west, but to the northwe have the narrow valley of the Cuyahoga with its rough and broken sides,and to the south the open coiuitry of the Portage Lakes. The river valleys are deep and steep-sided, forming natural walls thatprevent the easy extension or merging of the developed areas. This isparticularly true of the business district of Akron, which is unfortunatelyshut in by steep slopes on the north, west, and east. This wall-like effect isreflected in the steep grades that occur on many of the streets leading fromthe center of the business district. North Howard and Quarry Streets fur-nishing good exajiiples.
