NorthernOhio Traction and Light Company. No single feature in a citys develojnnent is more im))()rlaiit than thatof transportation. Therefore great interest attaches to the location andextension of the car lines. The existing lines have been shown on the survey, both single and doul)le track, and also proposed extensions. The existinglines covering 40 miles in length provide very well for the older parts of thecity. Extensions are greatly needed, and a special report on this subjectwas submitted with a special diagram to illustrate. By taking the initiativein the matter of installing ))ublic utilities the city could accomj)lish muchfor backward districts ;ind exercise a salutary control over the developmentof the city as a whole. Interurban trolley lines connect Akron with all the important neighboringcities, through cars being maintained with Cleveland, Massillon, Canton,Kent, and Ravenna. 25 iJian prepared for AkronChamber • Commerce Fr.ank H. Akron ST.Mt OF Ohio PlBUC-btMIPlBLICIPOPEPTIES1)1 \(.p\^i 26 Public and Semi-Public Properties LIKE all progressive niodern cities Akron has outgrown a number of its■^ pul)lie buildings and very shortly will be faced with the problem ofproviding new ones. In most cases it is a question of provifling a new sitealso, the old property being large enough only for present purposes. Inselecting new sites ample land should be acquired to care for the future, andthe location should l)e such if possible to allow for a well-planned groupingof buildings, thus obtaining those benefits which come from a permanentlyestablished center. The present railroad station in Akron is entirely inadecpuite and poorlylocated for the present trathe and express business which it is called upon tohandle. It is to be replaced within the next few years by a modern UnionStation whose location will do nuich to influence the future business growthof Akron and will be an important factor in determining the location o
