English: Great Lakes Exposition, Cleveland, Ohio (World Fair of 1936-1937). The ship is the "City of New York", the ship that carried Byrd on his first Antarctic expedition (1928–1930). The "City" was docked at the Exposition throughout its two year run. She had earlier appeared at the the Chicago Century of Progress Exposition (1933-1934). The member of the crew shown is boatswain Fred Voight who was assigned to the second expedition (1933-35). Fred C. Voight (Frederick Carl Voight) (-1955). Served as one of two special sea-post clerks on board the freighter JACOB RUPPERT. The clerks were: Richard S. Russell and Fred C. Voight. The dog "Chief" is one of the 153 dogs taken on the second expedition. The Great Lakes Exposition (also known as the World Fair of 1936) was held in Cleveland, Ohio, in the summers of 1936 and 1937, along the Lake Erie shore north of downtown. |
