In her haste, however, she drop-ped one of her glass slippers on the stairs, 29 i n d e r e 1 1 a and the prince, who ran after her, pickedit up. The prince next day sent out a heraldwith a trumpet, and a little page boy withthe glass slipper on a velvet cushion, toproclaim that any lady whom the glassslipper should fit should become his wife.All the ladies begged to try it on, but theirfeet were all too large. When Cinderellas sisters heard of thisthey tried to force their feet into the tinyslipper, but it was all in vain. As theywere angrily giving it up, Cinderella said: 30
