The history of John Street Church sincethen is practically a record of the influenceexerted by the personality and work of itsfirst and only minister- Dr. Stewart—whobecame the father of the ministry inAberdeen, his length of service in the cityexceeding that of any minister in any of 250 THE CHUltCHES the denominations. Dr. Stewart, who wasa native of Coupar-Angus, was a student atGlasgow University, but in order to ben>ore useful in his congregation he alsotook the medical course at AberdeenUniversity. He was afterwards awardedan honorary degree of M.D. from theAmerican Anthropological University,and, later on, he also received from acrossthe Atlantic the degrees of LL.D. andD.D., several of his earlier books havingbeen well received in America. Society of Great Britain, a Fellow of theSociety of Science, Letters, and Arts, andalso a Fellow of the Atheneeum Society.Dr. Stewart published many works, bothon theological and temperance subjects.The former include volumes on TheCreation, or Moses and Science inHarmony, The Mosaic Authorship ofDeuteronomy, The Confession of FaithTested, The Divinity of Christ, etc.Among his many publications on temper-ance subjects, the most prominent are hisBible Temperance Commentary and apamphlet on Unfermented Bible Wines.To the general public Dr. Stew art was bestknown for many years as a very able andcourageous controversialist. He was alwaysready to meet his opponents, and manycan recall the great interest aroused inthe community by some of his encounters. Perhaps his most notable achievement inthis connection was when he met in public-debate the well-known Secularist, Mr.Charles Watts.
