The history of John Street Church sincethen is practically a record of the influenceexerted by the personality and work of itsfirst and only minister- Dr. Stewart—whobecame the father of the ministry inAberdeen, his length of service in the cityexceeding that of any minister in any of 250 THE CHUltCHES the denominations. Dr. Stewart, who wasa native of Coupar-Angus, was a student atGlasgow University, but in order to ben>ore useful in his congregation he alsotook the medical course at AberdeenUniversity. He was afterwards awardedan honorary degree of M.D. from theAmerican Anthropological University,and, later on, he also received from acrossthe Atlantic the degrees of LL.D. andD.D., several of his earlier books havingbeen well received in America. He was alwaysready to meet his opponents, and manycan recall the great interest aroused inthe community by some of his encounters.
