Description

Chrysostomus Matanasius. Line engraving by Calotin after "Apelles". Chrysostomus Matanasius is a pseudonym of Thémiseul de Saint-Hyacinthe, a satirical writer. This french-language article has a great description of this satirical portrait, which includes (translated) "the arms engraved at the bottom of the doctor's portrait are a bellows, with a peacock and a donkey for supports, and a parrot for a crest; which means that Dr. Mathanasius is ignorant like a donkey, proud as a peacock, filled with wind like a bellows, and repeating like a parrot what was said before him. We read around this portrait: Chrysostomus Mathanasius D r . QSMDLL; which can be interpreted as: Doctor who makes fun of literature." The text below reads "nil volentibus arduum" = nothing is difficult for those willing.
