DescriptionChromosomal spreads of single itch mite (Sarcoptes scabiei) cells.png |
English: Chromosomal spreads of single itch mite (Sarcoptes scabiei) cells. A) 17 chromosomes can be counted while B) shows 18 chromosomes. Chromosomes are highlighted in pink for clarification. Scale bar = 5 μm. While the cause for the disparate numbers is unknown, it may arise because of an XO sex determination mechanism, where males lack the sex chromosome and therefore have one less chromosome than the female. |
