Notes |
This print is in a booklet recording a meeting of the Hampstead Conversazione Society on 7th January 1847 in which the processes of lithotint and colour lithography were demonstrated during the evening. N.B. Although not specified in the text, the process of anastatic printing (in effect, transfer lithography) was also demonstrated. [Information Michael Twyman, who also raised the question of who did the printing, and how a four colour lithograph could have been printed in one evening, since the normal practice would have been to let each working dry for a day or so before adding the next.] The booklet consists of six sheets sewn (?) together: a double sided sheet of printed text written by Nathanial Holmes and five prints. The first page of text, on the recto, records the date and purpose of the meeting and lists four prints: - Illuminated wreath in colours by Nath.l J. Holmes, Hon. Sec. - Sketches in lithotint by E. W. Dighton - May. Lithography by W. E. Frost, Esq., A.R.A. - Sad memories. Lithography by Alfred D. Fripp, Esq The second page, on the verso, which bears Nathanial Holmes's initials at the bottom, is an introduction to Hullmandel's discovery of the process of lithotint and a comparison of this method with 'chalk tints' used in lithography. The prints which remain in the booklet are a set of four component workings (1847,0609.2-1848,0609.5) of a four-colour ink-drawn lithograph as well as the finished print described here (1847,0609.1). The Dighton lithotint in the list is also in the Prints and Drawings collection (1847,0609.6). |

This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
