• The former attribution of this sheet to Jacob Jordaens is untenable. None of his sheets exhibit a style similar to that shown here. A note by Heinrich Geissler on the mat suggests that Mathias Kager or Hans Friedrich Schorer may be the artist of this drawing. Drawings by Kager are more mannerist in feeling and can be ruled out. However, works by the Augsburg artist Hans Friedrich Schorer indicate that he is probably responsible for this sheet. A signed and dated drawing by Schorer in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (inv. no. 1998.41.8), appears to be by the same hand as the drawing in the Library of Congress. Both the medium and the morphology of the figures compare favorably in each drawing. In addition, lumpy, nervous drapery and short strokes occur in both sheets. Schorer made a practice of copying works by other artists. His drawing in New York is a copy of Paolo Fiammingo. The inscription on the present drawing could indicate that it is also a copy by Schorer, in this case after a work by Jacob Jordaens. However, no corresponding work by Jordaens is known. The date 1622 appears to refer to the date Schorer made his copy.
