(Tortuga Island=Turtle Island) Wormeley, Ralph, was a son of Christopher Wormeley, Esq., and a descendant of Sir John de Wormeley, of Hadfield, county York, England (1312), and brother of Christopher Wormely, Esq., acting governor of the Tortuga Island, 1631-35, who also settled in Virginia. he was born about 1620 and came to Virginia about 1635 and settled in York county. He was a justice of the county in 1648, with the rank of captain, and in 1650 was made a member of the council. He died in 1651. In 1646 he married Agatha Eltonhead, widow of Luke Stubbins, gentleman, of Northampton county, Virginia. She was the daughter of Richard Eltonhead, of Eltonhead, county Lancaster England, and on the death of Wormeley she married Sir Henry Chicheley, a royalist who fled to Virginia in 1649 and was afterwards lieutenant governor. He was father of Ralph Wormeley, who became secretary of state of Virginia, and descendent of the Beverley family and Holmes, also spelled Homes Hoomes who held the will of Ralph Wormley of 1812.In 1865 when some soldiers from the Union army Raided Chericoke Joseph Burrell aka Joseph Mayo was Selected by the Braxton family to turn over the Keys to the store house, Cater Braxton was the Delegate of the Pamunkey Lands and Signer of the Deceleration of Independance.
