Summary

[edit]
Description

This plaque from 1921 is found along the stairway leading to the Pedway, from the street-level entrance at the southwest corner of Michigan and Randolph, outside the Chicago Cultural Center.

The plaque reads, in part: "This subway built by Illinois Central Railroad Co. At the request of Mayor Wm. Hale Thompson 1921"

Mayor Wm. Hale Thompson is Chicago's infamous "Big Bill"

The "subway" refers to the passageway under Michigan Avenue, leading to Millennium Station. That makes this passageway the oldest part of the Pedway system (contradicting most references that list the 1951 CTA corridor connecting the Dearborn and State subway stations as the oldest Pedway part).

Incidentally, the sign's use of the word "subway" is a more European usage of the word, where subway typically means a short to medium length passage for pedestrians or vehicles under a surface-level street.
