Summary[edit]
DescriptionCharles Morgan headstone.jpg |
English: Memorial to Charles Morgan (1745-1803), an early European settler (possibly a salt maker) of the Liverpool, NY area, who, according to family legend, served in the Revolutionary War. Allegedly Morgan served in Captain William Gifford's Company, 3rd New Jersey Regiment, and was employed as a spy. He is supposed to have aided in the capture of British spy Major John Andre and the subsequent exposure of General Benedict Arnold's betrayal of the Continental forces through giving the British plans for the crucial fort at West Point. Other legends say Morgan was the inspiration for James Fenimore Cooper's character Harvey Birch in The Spy On Neutral Ground and that he served as a spy under the Marquis de Lafayette during the Yorktown campaign, posing as a deserter to gain entry to the British camp, gathering intelligence, giving false inteligence to the British and persuading several soldiers to desert the British army. The memorial stone was erected in the early 20th century by a descendant of Charles Morgan, located near his wife Rachel's grave in the Morgan Meeting House Cemetery in Clay, NY, where many of Charles' descendants settled. Charles' remains are believed to have been buried along Old Liverpool Road in The Town of Salina in an unmarked burial ground, near where the Pacific Health Club stands today.
The headstone reads: "CHARLES MORGAN REVOLTY SPY ONE OF THE CAPTORS OF MAJOR ANDRE CAPT. WM. GIFFORD'S CO. COL. DAYTON'S 3rd N.J. REG. 1745-1803" |
