Summary
[edit]DescriptionCharles M. Greiner House, Buffalo, New York - 20211128.jpg |
English: The Charles M. Greiner House, 35 Hodge Avenue, Buffalo, New York, November 2021. Designed by local "society architect" Charles Day Swan, this two-and-a-half-story wood-framed residence is a good example of the hybrid Colonial Revival/Queen Anne architecture that was a popular trend in upper-class residential architecture around the time of its construction (c. 1889). The main façade, with its careful symmetry, testified to the former, while the enormous side gable that encloses the attic is more suggestive of the latter. Charles M. Greiner (1863-1956), the original owner of the house, was executive secretary of the Pitts Agricultural Works (later Buffalo Pitts Company), manufacturers of steam engines, threshing machines, and other agricultural implements. Greiner and his family lived in the house until 1898. |
