The sailor from the yacht gave assistance at the camp.Here is a note from Charles to his grandmother, in which hedescribes the camp with characteristic precision. July 22, 1871. Dear Grandma, — I got your letter this afternoon, andI am sorry you are not any better. Our Camp is on CalfIsland which is farther off than Iron-bound. There are fourtents. The tent Sam, and Papa, and I have, is the largest,and has a curtain in the middle to separate it, from the Par-lor and Dining-room. Aunt Fannie and Uncle Henry haveone tent, Agnes and Mary another, and Kelly sleeps in thekitchen. Here is a plan of the way our tents are placed :they are on a peninsula with water all round except to theright, where it broadens into an island. Kelly built thearbor to wash dishes in and eat. It is foggy to day and we cannot see MountDesert at all. Your affectionate grandson, Charles Eliot. The camp described in the above letter was subsequentlymoved to a more central position on the island. This way of passing the summer in camping and yachtingcombined was continued by the family until 1878 inclusive,excepting the summer of 1877. The children began withimaginative sports in the woods on Calf Island and aboutthe puddles the tide left in the gently sloping ledges whichformed part of its shores. They sailed their shingle boatson the puddles, and imagined the sailors, cargoes, and har-bors, and the lighthouses and day-marks of the coast. Theyhad caches of treasures at various mysterious points on thatlarger half of the island which was wooded, and with thehelp of their elders they made various beloved pat
