THE OPEN SPACES OF BOSTON IN 1892 AND 1902 COSIPAPvED THE RESERVATIONS ACQUIRED 739 in 1892, although the takings along the banks of the riverhave all been made in strict accordance with the principles hethen laid down. With the exception of the properties of theBoston and Albany Railroad and the Brookline Gas Workson the south bank, both banks of the river have been securedfor the public, or restricted against all objectionable uses, asfar as Newton Upper Falls; and above that point the Brook-line and Newton Water Works have large holdings on thestream. On the Neponset River, the Fowle meadows above Read-ville and the banks and salt marshes below have been se-cured, with small exceptions, down to a point in MiltonLower Mills within two miles of Dorchester Bay. The areaof the Neponset River Reservation in charge of the Metro-politan Park Commission is 929 acres, against 563 acres onCharles River and 290 acres on the Mystic.
