Mughus). Such specimen plants are certainly quitein place in a formal garden intended to be decorative. Theyshould, however, be chosen for their appropriateness, andgrouped with due regard to the effect upon their neighbors.The Mountain Pine just mentioned is too roughly pictur-esque to appear in a garden like this where elegance is theend and aim. One of the daughtersof the house married Mr. Nathaniel Amory, who became thenext owner, and he sold the property to Mr. R. D. Shepherd,and he to Mr. J. P. Gushing. Mr. Gushing spent many thou-sand dollars every year upon the place, and made it, thirty-six years ago, the most famous seat near Boston. Mr. S. E.Payson, the last owner, maintained and increased this fame.
