If, tempted by this glimpse of distance, the visitor turnsthe corner of the building and steps into the round-archedpavilion which is attached to the north side of the house, thewhole broad panorama of the river and the Catskills is spreadbefore him to the westward; but even here the wide prospectis broken into scenes and framed by the solid piers and archesof the pavilion itself, and by the trunks and branches of greattrees, chiefly Locusts, standing on the brink of the irregulargrassy slope which falls steeply to a narrow wood on the bluffat the rivers edge.
