By these means he managed to keep atwork, and near the end of June he passed his examinationssuccessfully, and in due course received the degree of Bach-elor of Arts cum laude. As soon as his examinations wereover, without waiting for Class Day or Commencement, hestarted for Mt. Desert, putting a horse and light wagon, which were to be transported to the Mt. Desert house, onboard the Bangor boat, landing at Bucksport, and drivingthence, via Ellsworth, to Northeast Harbor. His commenton this drive, made to his friend Thaxter, is as follows : Avery beautiful road. Woods, big hills, and many lakes andponds. Everything very fresh and green. Apples in blos-som, and corn about four inches up. ^T. 22) GRADUATION 31 So ended his general education. Regarded as undesignedpreparation for his profession^ his plays, sports, and com-pletely voluntary labors had obviously been quite as impor-tant as the systematic work of school and college.
