Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Charles E. Walbridge House, 120 Oakland Place, Buffalo, New York, December 2021. Designed by architect Martin C. Miller, this handsome residence is an example of Romanesque Revival residential architecture that places an unusual emphasis on vertical orientation, manifested here in the relative narrowness of the façade and the steep pitch both of the gables atop the dormers and of the roof itself. Nonetheless, the design displays the requisite heavy massing (especially evident in the two-story tower that makes up the left half of the façade), and more traditional stylistic hallmarks - such as the semicircular relieving arch above the entrance and the œil-de-bœuf windows in the dormers and on the second floor - figure in as well. Lt. Col. Charles Eliphalet Walbridge (1841-1913) was a Civil War veteran-turned-hardware store owner who, along with his younger brother Harry, ascended to the ranks of the leading merchants in Buffalo. He lived in the house from its completion in 1896 until his death.
