Summary[edit]

Description
English: Name: Charles Cunningham

Arrested for: Indecent exposure
Arrested at: North Shields Police Station
Arrested on: 9 February 1903
Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-13-Charles Cunningham
The Shields Daily Gazette for 9 February 1903 reports:
"Charles Cunningham (28), a young man, very respectably dressed, and residing at 14 Widdrington Terrace, was charged at North Shields this morning with indecent exposure at the back of Percy Gardens, Tynemouth, yesterday afternoon.
PC Scott deposed to concealing himself in an empty house and watching the defendant's conduct. His evidence was corroborated by Mr William Davidson, a resident at Percy Gardens. Defendant pleaded hard to the Bench to impose a fine. If he were sent to prison he would be ruined for life. He would not dare go back to his work or his home.
Mr Charles Foot, who presided, said the Bench considered it a most disgraceful case. They had decided to send defendant to prison for one month and they also wished to thank Mr Davidson for the assistance he had given the police".
These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1).
