Summary[edit]

Description Charing Cross Station was built on the site of the old Hungerford Market. The original station was built in 1864 for the South Eastern Railway. The hotel was added a year later giving the station a French renaissance appearance. In front was created a replica of the original 13th century Eleanor Cross and this has recently completely refurbished. The station suffered heavy bomb damage in WWII and today much of the original station canopy has been replaced by a modern structure. However the first two arches and all of the retaining walls remain.
