Summary[edit]
DescriptionCharaideo Maidam.jpg |
English: Maidam - tumuli of the Ahom Kingdom
A unique creation of the Ahom Dynasty of Assam ruling the Ahom Kingdom through 1228 AD to 1826 AD. They buried their kings and members of the royal family in a burrow shaped mound of earth with structures of bricks all around it. The monument resembled the Egyptian pyramids with only the difference of the raw materials used. Hundreds of such maidams are still found scattered all around Assam's Sivasagar district, Dibrugarh, Jorhat and Golaghat districts glorifying the rich cultural traditions of the Ahoms. The Charaideo maidam area is preserved by the ASI as well as by the State Government's agency in two parts as a place of historical importance and it is open for public viewing on weekdays.
