JPEG file comment | The Chapel at Mauna ‘Ala: Queen Lili‘uokalani had the building physically converted in 1904. Circular windows on two sides were cut out, where originally there were large crosses, and stained glass was installed. The Queen had arch-shaped windows which originally held the colors of the Hawaiian flag, in glass, removed and rose-colored stained glass installed. On the outside of the building, they put cement facing on top of the coral, because the coral was actually crumbling off of the building. With the passing of Prince Kuhio in 1922, his widow Princess Kahanu finished the conversion of the mausoleum building. The sanctuary area was created, the first koa paneling was lined along the walls, and the carved koa altar is installed. The flooring is of another native hardwood, the ohi‘a wood. |
