DescriptionChandeleur Island Light 02.jpg |
Sometime in the late 1980s, probably 1986, a colleague and I flew with representatives of a defense communications contractor and the Mississippi Air National Guard out to Chandeleur Island, in the Gulf of Mexico, not far from the mouth of the Mississippi, to conduct a feasibility survey for installing a small flight training antenna on the island, either on its own structure, or on the old lighthouse. Nothing came of the project and the island and the lighthouse were finally wiped away by Hurricane Katrina. The Sikorsky Skycrane and crew that flew us out were the same that, not long before, had lifted a new statue to the top of the Texas Capitol, after the Texas Air National Guard had made several unsuccessful attempts. The crew made a point of telling me, a Texan, this. In 2007, the folks with Louisiana Sea Grant saw one of my photos of the lighthouse and asked if they could use my photos. I happily sent the slides and some may be viewed here [1] along with other great photos and information on Chandeleur Island. The slides, unfortunately, including some interior shots of the lighthouse, have since been lost in the mail. |
