Title
Ceramic (Midlands Yellow Ware) finial from a large cup c. 1640-1660AD
Description
English: Fragment of a ceramic finial of Midlands yellow ware, probably from a handle of a large cup dating to the mid 17th century (c. 1640-1660 AD). Similar supports for chaffing dishes, or thumb-stops for handles on mugs or jugs are illustrated by Spavold & Brown (2005, 100).  The object takes the form of a crudely formed face with eyes, nose and mouth made up of simple circular indentations and grooves made in the clay prior to firing.  The hair, or head-dress is made up of a series of deep grooves.

The fabric is a pale buff colour with few, or no inclusions.  The glaze is yellow and is crazed which is typical of yellow wares. There are some small brown spots which are caused by the reaction of iron oxide inclusions with the glaze. Thumbing marks can clearly be seen on the reverse of the object.

Height: 41.8mm; width: 28.1mm: thickness: 12.8mm; weight: 11g.
