Description
Italiano: Centro storico Santa Lucia del Mela
Deutsch: Das ehemalige Schloss Castello di Santa Lucia del Mela liegt auf dem höchsten Punkt des Ortes Santa Lucia del Mela und beherrscht damit die ganze Stadt. Der runde Turm wurde noch von Handwerkern gemäß arabischer Tradition gebaut. 1249 der Stauferkaiser Friedrich II. hat das Gebäude dann mit Zinnen versehen lassen. Die Burg diente als Verteidigungsfestung gegen die Angriffe der Peloritani. Die Hauptfassade hat noch ein gotisches Spitzbogenportal mit Bogenrücken aus Lavagestein. Im Turm in einem Raum mit Kreuzgewölbe, der heute eine Bibliothek beherbergt. Ehemals ein römisch-katholisches Priesterseminar, ist es heute ein Kloster mit Marienwallfahrtsort. Verehrt wird die "Madonna della Neve" mit einer Statue von Antonello Gagini. Betreut wird das Heiligtum mit Kloster und angeschlossenem kirchlichem Gäste-, Tagungs- und Exerzitienhaus von Herz-Jesu-Priestern aus Mexiko.
