| Description |
English: Centrale shopping centre and tram stop 'Centrale' is the third large shopping mall to be opened in Croydon, having to compete with the Whitgift Centre and the Drummond Centre. Usage has been slow to build up, and it remains uncrowded at most times. When the mall was first proposed, the spelling was going to be the Dutch 'Centraal', but somewhere along the way it became altered to the French version. The tram stop is the only extra stop that has been added to the Croydon tram system; it is unique in being a bus and tram stop combined. The cost to the tram system was calculated at over a million pounds - this was not the construction cost, but the cost of one extra tram to maintain existing schedules with an extra stop on the main loop. Neither that extra money, nor the extra tram it represents, has been forthcoming. |
