Summary
[edit]DescriptionCentipede Genovesa island (5051703601).jpg |
Alas, this centipede looks nothing like the Galapagos Centipede shown in my Wildlife of the Galapagos guidebook. Wrong color, wrong size, and probably not enough legs. But, as dog is my witness, I did indeed see and photograph this individual while I was walking along a trail on Genovesa Island. However, my Galapagos wildlife book offers me an out - it says "There are at least eight species of centipede in the Galapagos, the others are all very much smaller. (Emphasis added). Now, the centipede in this photo was huge, at least six inches long. If the Galapagos Centipede is much larger, it must be a real terror. This guy didn't tarry. It was using all its legs to propel itself along the ground very quickly. Moments after I took this photo, it disappeared into loose lava rocks and was gone from sight. I don't want to be pedantic about this, but this centipede actually has only 40 legs, 38 if you discount the v-shaped tackle at the rear. Genovesa Island, Galapagos Archipelago, Ecuador. |
