presume it was done, asI have heard intimated, to give Lafayette College the benefit ofa stronger financial backing in the churches of Pennsylvania. On June 22d, 1870 the Presbytery of Lehigh was constitutedby the Synod of Philadelphia, and our church was thus trans-ferred from the Second Presbytery of Philadelphia to the Pres-bytery of Lehigh. The Durham Church of Bucks County was the first churchorganized out of this church, on March 23d, 1836. A nucleusof a congregation had been ministered to by Rev. Bishop andRev. Gray. It enjoyed but a brief existence—Durham soil notproving favorable to the growth of Caivanistic doctrines. In 1876 Dr. Miller said T recognize among our communicants38 ministers of the Gospel, and there are probably others withwhom I am not acquainted. In the list are the names of Prof.William H. Green of Princeton, the eminent philologist, andProf. Charles Elliott, D. D. of Lafayette. To this list may beadded seven ministers sent out during Mr. Haines pastorate.
