[edit]DescriptionCave travertine ("Kokoweef Cave Onyx") (late Cenozoic; cave hosted in Paleozoic marine limestone; cave at Kokoweef Peak, Ivanpah Mountains, Mojave Desert, northeastern San Bernardino County, southeastern California, USA) (15518044498).jpg |
Cave travertine (slice, 5.7 cm across at its widest) from the late Cenozoic of California, USA. This is a slice through a mass of what appears to be a composite stalactite, which is a type of dripstone. Dripstone is one of numerous varieties of speleothem, which refers to all secondary mineral deposits in caves. Speleothem (= "cave formations") is most commonly composed of calcite (CaCO3). Calcareous speleothem is referred to using the rock term "travertine". Travertine most commonly occurs in caves, but also occurs around many cold springs and some hot springs. This material comes from a cave in Kokoweef Peak in southeastern California, where several mines occur. Cave travertine from this locality is called "Kokoweef Cave Onyx" in the retail market. "Onyx" is a horrid term and has no fixed definition. In this case, onyx is merely cave travertine. Age & geologic context: late Cenozoic; cave hosted in Paleozoic marine limestone Locality: cave at Kokoweef Peak (possibly Crystal Cave or Kokoweef Cave), Ivanpah Mountains, southeast of the town of Mountain Pass, Mojave Desert, northeastern San Bernardino County, southeastern California, USA (Kokoweef Peak is located at 35° 25' 12.37" North, 115° 29' 37.71" West) |
